Here's how to use the UOC Library's resources to find information about art, education, psychology, tourism, economics and business

You can watch the videos whenever you like on the Library's BiblioSkills training website

The videos of the latest webinars organized by the Library in partnership with various publishing groups are now available. The recordings, which are available in the Library's BiblioSkills training space, provide an introduction to platforms and databases where you can find specialized information about your field of study.

You can access any of the resources by searching for their name directly in the Library's search engine, where you will find them among the first results listed. You can also access them from the Digital collection by field page.

You must log in with your Virtual Campus credentials to access these resources.

Finding psychology resources in the UOC Library

This video reviews the psychology content available in the Library, including journals and videos of therapy sessions of the American Psychological Association (APA).

 

 

 

 

 

 

The following search is performed in the video: "cognitive behavioural therapy" near/4 trauma near/4 (you* teen* adolesc*). The operator near indicates the proximity between the words, and the asterisk is used to obtain results that include all the derivatives of the terms you* teen* adolesc*, such as teens and teenager.

Learn how to use Graó: books and journals specializing in education

The video presents the Graó platform, a collection of education journals and manuals focusing on infant, primary and secondary education.

 

 

 

 

 

 

  • What is Graó and what does it contain? The trainer provides an introduction to the Graó publishing group, which offers content for the continuous training of teaching staff.
  • What topics are covered in the journals? You will find articles on everyday practice in the world of education (educational innovation, projects, evidence-based education, etc.). There are general interest journals, and others specializing in various didactic fields.
  • What topics do the books cover? An overview of the collections of books that Graó offers.
  • How to do a search in Graó. A demonstration of how to search for articles and journal issues using the general search engine and filters to refine your results.
  • How to read the journal articles. You can view the contents with an online reader or download them in PDF format, so you can access them whenever you want, without any restrictions.
  • How to read the books. Read the book online, in full or by chapters, or download the whole book in EPUB format so you can read it whenever you want.

Getting started with SABI: information about thousands of companies

SABI is a financial analysis platform containing general information and annual accounts for Spanish companies. The video explains how to search for data in order to perform an analysis of the sector, an economic-financial analysis or a strategic marketing analysis.

 

 

 

 

  • What does it contain? The main sources of the data include the deposit of accounts with the Register of Companies.
  • How to do a search in SABI. You can search directly for a specific company by its name, tax code or identification number (BvD ID) or obtain data for several companies in the form of a list. You can combine about 20 search filters, such as the company's location, operating income, number of workers, etc. The list of filters will appear at the bottom of the home page as you select the criteria, in the Estrategia de búsqueda [Search strategy] field.

For example, you can try to search for companies that work in a particular area by clicking on the Actividad [Activity] option, followed by Clasificaciones actividades [Activity categories] and select one (the National Classification of Economic Activities 2009 is shown by default).

  • How to search for companies and customize the list. You will be shown a series of default fields and, in the side menu, you can click on Formato de lista / Nuevo formato [List format / New format] to add extra fields (contact information, website, executive management, etc.).
  • How to export the data. The university as a whole is subject to a weekly download limit on the platform, and we recommend you only download the data you need for this reason. Downloads can be in Excel, Word, Adobe Acrobat PDF or Rich Text Format.
  • What you'll find in a company's report. By default, you will be shown a standard report containing basic information, the financial profile, a description of the company's activities, operating details, the management team, graphics, etc. You can customize it, adding or deleting data, by clicking on the Formato del informe / Nuevo formato [Report format / New format] option.

To view a company's financial details according to the 2007 General Accounting Plan format, go to the side menu and click on the Datos financieros / Plan general de contabilidad 2007 [Financial details / 2007 General Accounting Plan] button.

Find out about Factiva - an archive of finance news and information

Factiva is a database of news and corporate reports, which is essential for anyone who wants to stay up to date or follow any topic that is reported in the media.

 

 

 

 

  • What is Factiva and what content does it offer? It is a database owned by Dow Jones & Company and the Reuters news agency. It is usually used in the professional world to monitor market trends, carry out competitive surveillance or stay abreast of current affairs with newspapers, market reports and corporate information. It contains newspapers including The Times, The Guardian and El País.
  • What you'll find on the home page. When you log in, you'll see information selected by the UOC Library: international news, interesting publications and a stream of hot topics.
  • How to do a search in Factiva. You can change the interface language in Settings (the cogwheel icon). To begin a search, we recommend you go to the Search / Search Builder option in the top menu, where you can apply advanced search mechanisms such as proximity operators, Boolean operators, quotation marks, asterisks and parentheses.

The following search is performed in the video: energ* near1 or (price* or prix* or prec* or preu or prez*) in order to obtain results that include words related to energy, and near the word price in multiple languages. The asterisk is a wild card, and the results will contain all the derivatives of the search terms: price and prices.

  • Working with the results. You can select various contents to read all together, send by email, download in HTML, Word and PDF format or apply filters to refine the results further.
  • Advanced searches. On the Search Builder page, when you enter any word in the search box, the platform will automatically suggest the most appropriate search terms (it will do this in the language in which you have set up the interface).

On the Search Builder page, the Factiva team has created predefined searches on specific topics in the Factiva Expert Search section. For example, you can use News sentiment to retrieve news items that address a topic with a negative or positive focus.

  • How to search for corporate profiles. These can be accessed from the tab Companies - Market / Companies in the top menu. Each company profile contains an overview, financial information, and related news.

Find information about tourism with Hospitality and Tourism

Hospitality & Tourism Complete is a resource for students and professionals in the tourism sector, containing information on sustainable tourism and trends in the sector. In addition to journals, it contains reports on companies and countries, books and newspapers.

 

 

 

 

 

 

  • Where to consult the complete list of journals. Click on Publications in the top menu to see the titles available on the platform. You can choose one and create alerts to receive an email notification when a new issue is published.
  • How to perform a basic search. A list of suggested terms appears when you type a keyword into the search box. We recommend using search mechanisms such as quotation marks or consulting the list of keywords in documents to expand the information.
  • How to perform a search with the thesaurus. From the Thesaurus tab in the top menu, you can access a list of search terms specializing in tourism and hospitality.
  • How to read the contents. You can download the content in PDF or read it online in HTML, depending on each specific case. You can save the content to Google Drive or One Drive, print it, send it by email, save it in a personal folder on the platform, or export the bibliographic citation. You have more alternatives in HTML documents, such as listening to the text with an audio player, and underlining or annotating text.
  • What you can do with the results. Save your searches in a personal folder, or create alerts to receive a notification when new content is published. Use the side filters to refine your results further.

Explore the world of business with Business Source Complete

Business Source Complete is a collection of journals, trade publications and bibliographic information covering business topics such as administrative processes, marketing, production, and finance.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  • Where to consult the complete list of journals. Click on the Publications button in the top menu to see all the titles available on the platform. You can choose one and create alerts to receive an email notification when a new issue is published.
  • How to perform a search in Business Source Complete. A list of suggested terms appears when you type a keyword into the search box. We recommend using search mechanisms such as quotation marks or truncations, or consulting the list of keywords in documents to expand your search.

The following search is performed in the video: motivation in the workplace AND m#an and wom#en NOT child in order to obtain results focusing on motivation in the workplace about both women and men. The hash is a wild card for finding results that contain any of the derivatives of the search terms (man, men).

  • How to perform a search with the thesaurus. Go to the Thesaurus option in the top menu and you can open a list of vocabulary tailor-made for the platform. The platform recommends keywords when you search in order to make your results more accurate. If for example you type oil in the search engine, it will suggest petroleum.
  • How to search for information about a company. From the Company Information tab at the top, you can search by company name, parent company, stock market identifier code and keyword.
  • How to search for company profiles. Click on More in the top menu, and then on the Company profiles.
  • What you can do with the results. Save your searches in a personal folder, or create alerts to receive a notification when new content is published. Use the side filters to refine your searches further.

You can enable the Full text filter to consult results that have the content available to read, and within Types of sources, you have the SWOT analysis facility with real analysis of leading companies.

  • How to read the contents. You can download the content in PDF or read it online in HTML, depending on each specific case. You can save the content to Google Drive or One Drive, print it, send it by email, save it in a personal folder on the platform, or export the bibliographic citation. You have more alternatives in HTML documents, such as listening to the text with an audio player, and underlining or annotating text.

Find art and design information at Art, Design & Architecture Collection

The Art, Design and Architecture Collection is three collections in one: articles from 600 contemporary art journals and three collections of bibliographic information - ARTbibliographies Modern (ABM), Design and Applied Arts Index (DAAI) and the International Bibliography of Art (IBA).

 

 

 

  • What can you find there? It contains highly specialized information about the field of art and design, in specific areas including video art, NFTs and product design. It has extensive coverage (dating back to 1970 and earlier) and a very broad geographical and linguistic scope. You can read articles from academic and professional journals including Antiquity, The Architectural Review, The Art Journal, Apollo, Tate, and Design Week.
  • How to perform a search. Explains how to perform a search by applying advanced search mechanisms such as proximity operators, Boolean operators, quotation marks, asterisks and parentheses.

The following search is performed in the video: Bauhaus near/8 expression* in order to find information related to the artistic movement and its various creative expressions.

  • Working with the results. You can cite the results, send them by email, save them in your account (if you have registered) and create search alerts to receive a notification in your email when a new document is added.
  • How to perform an advanced search. Use the All subjects and indexing filter to make the results more relevant. You'll see other more specific search fields if you select a specific database.

Prepare your business plan with Statista

The video introduces you to the UOC Library's statistics platform, and the content and tools available to analyse the market and consumers and help you with your business plan. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  • What is Statista? A collection available in the UOC Library where you can consult statistics and reports from more than 22,000 sources. According to Statista's editorial team, UOC users save an average of 28 minutes for each search on the platform compared to Google.
  • How to search for information about consumer trends. The Insights / Consumer Insights section contains information on the major consumer trends of the coming years, based on a survey carried out by Statista involving 700,000 consumers in 55 countries. You can create your own report and consumer profile by choosing from all the variables available.

In the video, the trainer shows how they have developed four very specific consumer profiles based on Statista data, which could be included in a business or communication plan.

  • How to perform a search. The interface is presented by default in English as this is the language in which the most content is offered. Enter the keywords in the search engine, and an icon appears next to each result describing the type of content (infographic, report, market studies, etc.). 
  • Working with the results. Each result contains a descriptive summary, the update date, related content, the source from which the data were extracted and the option to export the citations in various formats.
  • How to search for market data. The trainer presents how to search for second-hand market forecasts. In the Insights / Market Insights section search for the word "apparel". From here you can consult growth data, the description of the market, compare data for countries, and you can consult the methodology that was used to collect the data. The information can be downloaded in .csv or .xls format.
  • How to search for corporate data. From the Insights / Company Insights option simply type in the name of the company and refine the results with the filters. You can search for companies related to a specific area, such as climate leaders or artificial intelligence.
