There are three examples of prompts: preparing for a job interview, searching for information and planning your study time.

Test it out and fine tune your prompts to get the best possible results.

Always make sure you go over the answers to check for any errors or bias.

Prompts are the instructions you give the generative artificial intelligence (GAI) tools, such as Copilot, ChatGPT or Gemini. What you put in affects how accurate and relevant the responses are. If you want to make the most of these tools, it's vital you know how to write your prompts. That's why the team at the UOC's Library has put together this infographic with basic ideas on how to write a good prompt.

Among the tips you'll find, highlights include the importance of giving the tool a role to play and letting it know who the target audience is. It's also vital you clearly state what you want the tool to do, whether that be to write a text or search for information. Likewise, you need to indicate what tone and style you want (formal, friendly, academic) and what format (text, table, image). Don't forget to provide it with the context, too. This will help it understand what you need. Let it know what information needs to be included and what can be left out, and stress what ideas are most important.

To make it clearer, the infographic has three practical examples involving common situations at work or university: how to prepare for a job interview, how to search for information or how to plan your study time.

The infographic also stresses the importance of trying things out and fine-tuning the prompts until you get the best possible results.
