World Day for Audiovisual Heritage
The General Conference of UNESCO approved in 2005 the commemoration of a World Day for Audiovisual Heritage as a mechanism to raise general awareness of the need for urgent measures to be taken and to acknowledge the importance of audiovisual documents as an integral part of national identity.
General information and documents
Official website to celebrate this year's celebration of the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage 2014 is "Archives at Risk - Much More to Do!". Every year, activities are organized by different institutions worldwide around a theme to drum up interest in the event.
This document presents the results of its consultation on the potential outcomes of the celebration of a World Day for Audiovisual Heritage. It is a result of 33 C/Resolution 53 adopted by the General Conference, that proclaimed 27 October as the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage.
Official message to call upon all Governments to strengthen national policies to preserve and provide access to audiovisual heritage in all forms and to support professional activities for identifying and preserving collections of enduring value.
This Declaration was adopted by the 36th Session of the General Conference of UNESCO, on 10th November 2011, and is an important step in improving understanding and awareness of archives among the general public and key decision-makers. It is a powerful, succinct statement of the relevance of archives in modern society.
The preservation of the analogue film heritage and constraints and possibilities offered by the digital media is on the agenda of the annual conference of the International Federation of Film Archives FIAT/IFTA, a close partner to UNESCO in its action in the area of audiovisual archives.
It was commissioned by the IASA Executive Board in February 2000 to examine the issues underlying the process of setting priorities for the digital transfer of analogue and digital audio content, and to deliver a statement of principles for use by sound archives in their planning for digitisation.
International Institutions
It is the successor of the Round Table of Audiovisual Records and serves as a platform for international audiovisual archive associations to voice collective opinions and exercise influence at international and government level when decisions concerning the audiovisual cultural heritage are being taken.
IASA was established in 1969 in Amsterdam to function as a medium for international co-operation between archives that preserve recorded sound and audiovisual documents.
A non-profit professional Association established to advance the field of moving image archiving by fostering cooperation among individuals and organizations concerned with the acquisition, description, preservation, exhibition and use of moving image materials.
It was set up by the Council of Europe as a parcial Agreement (1992). The observatory provides statistical and analytical information on the fields of: film, television, video/DVD, new audiovisual media services and public policy on film and television
