Al sur de la frontera, al oeste del sol (1992)

The novel centres on the childhood friendship between a boy, Hajime, and a girl, Shimamoto, forged by listening to records on lonely evenings. When her family moves away, it leaves a hole in Hajime's life; now in this thirties, he has filled it with a stable life, a wife and two daughters and by owning two jazz clubs in Tokyo. When Shimamoto appears in his bar one day, Hajime's long-lost feelings return.
